A grand piano action contains more than 8,000 moving parts, and an upright is not far behind. Felt compresses, cloth wears, glue joints dry out, and screws work loose. The result is a piano that fights the player: keys that stick, notes that will not repeat, a touch that is heavy in one octave and light in the next.
Regulation is the process of bringing all of those parts back into their correct geometric relationships. It is unglamorous, patient work, and it transforms how an instrument feels far more than most owners expect. Many pianos written off as "tired" simply need regulating.
Repairs are quoted after an inspection, because guessing at a price without opening the piano serves nobody. You will be told what is wrong, what it will cost, and — just as honestly — when a repair is not worth doing.
